Frequently asked questions on cleansing and colon hydroytherapy

What does a Colonic do?

A colonic gently cleanses, exercises, tones and re-shapes the colon to work more effectively. Colonics promote overall health and hydration.

Do I need more than one session?

It took time to pollute our bodies to the point of illness.  It will take time to reverse the process through a series of bowel cleansings. Each session will work more deeply in the colon and you will  feel more benefits with each appointment.  Each session helps to exercise and re-educate the bowel into working on a more regular basis and one session alone won't do this.

How often should I have it done?

This varies from person to person depending on their level of health at the time and their goals.  After reviewing your digestive health assessment, you and your hydrotherapist will establish your goals.  Keeping these goals in mind your hydrotherapist will advise you on how many sessions you may require to accomplish your goals. A series of colon hydrotherapy sessions is generally recommended to begin to bring the body back on the path to optimal health. Your hydrotherapist will reassess your progress during each appointment.

Do I need to do anything before a session?

IMPORTANT: No food or drink 2 hours prior to your colonic session.

  • The day before your colonic, eat light - preferably fresh raw fruits and vegetables along with whole grains.

  • Avoid gas forming foods such as broccoli, lettuce, cabbage, or black, pinto, kidney or garbanzo beans.

  • Hydrate your body with plenty of filtered water.

  • Juicing with raw vegetables prior to your session can be very beneficial.

  • The day of your colonic, eat a light breakfast and lunch, depending on your appointment time.

  • Avoid caffeine completely prior to your session.

Is it embarrassing?

No. Colon Hydrotherapy isn't embarrassing.  You are kept covered at all times and the hydrotherapist has had the treatment herself and understands how important it is to protect your dignity at all times.

Is there a time when I shouldn't have colon hydrotherapy?

Yes.   If you have congestive heart failure, uncontrolled hypertension, aneurysm, severe anemia, GI hemorrhage/perforation, severe hemorrhoids, rectal prolapse, renal insufficiency, chronic renal failure/dialysis, cirrhosis of the liver, carcinoma of the colon, fissures/fistulas, abdominal/inguinal hernias, colon/rectal surgery within last 6 months, or are in the first or third trimester of pregnancy, you shouldn't have colon hydrotherapy.

Can I get and infection from the procedure?

We use  pre-packaged, one time use, disposable speculums and tubing to ensure there is no potential for cross-contamination.  At Natural Balance, we adhere to the strict guidelines and recommendations of The International Association of Colon Hydrotherapy.

Is it harmful?

No.

Colon Hydrotherapy is a valuable procedure for a wide variety of conditions. Although it is not a cure, by stripping down the old toxic mucus lining of the bowel, we remove the number one source of illness in the body.  This is the first step in balancing the bowel, so that good bacteria can be reintroduced to keep the body safe.

What about laxatives?

Laxatives can make your bowel lazy causing larger quantities to be needed over time. This equals dependency on the laxative. They are toxic irritants to the lining of the colon.  In the body's attempt to get rid of the laxative, some fecal contents are removed.
All forms of laxatives, prescription or 'natural', are temporary solutions only, leading to dehydration, disruption of the pH balance in the digestive tract and shut down of the peristaltic action of your colon.

Will I lose weight?

You will lose waste  from your system.  Ridding the body of the excess waste and hardened mucus build-up helps you to absorb and metabolize the nutrients from food more efficiently.

Can I go back to work afterwards?

Absolutely.  We allow you to have time in the restroom following the session to ensure your bowel is settled.  You may sit in our waiting room until you feel comfortable to leave.  Generally our clients go straight back to work and get on with everyday life.
